Our next stop on the Ruta del Jaguar is Instituto Inhotim, a contemporary art museum and botanical garden located in Brumadinho, Minas Gerais - Brazil. Its expansive park space makes it one of the biggest open-air museums in the world.
Its location among the rich biomes of the Atlantic Forest and the tropical savanna of Cerrado, as well as the lush landscapes over 140 hectares open for visiting, offer a unique experience to visitors, blending art and nature. Artworks are displayed outdoors and in galleries which share the space with a Botanical Garden of more than 4.3 thousand rare botanic species from all continents. The space is special not only because of its beauty, but also because it exists in two of the most threatened biomes on the planet, and among the richest in terms of biodiversity. This makes Inhotim an exciting opportunity for research, as well as a tool for environmental preservation and education.
There are more than 140 hectares open for visiting, in addition to an extension of 250 hectares of Private Natural Heritage Reserve. The Botanical Garden manages collections of more than 4.3 thousand native Brazilian species and other exotic specimens from around the world. The structure of the Botanical Garden was carefully designed, and nowadays, the Institute is an international reference in tropical contemporary landscape design.

The art curation at Inhotim is the fruit of continuous efforts to disclose knowledge and display diverse experiences, whether through exhibitions, publications, or online activities. Periodically, artists are commissioned to create works especially for Inhotim in order to foster long-term partnerships with artists. The institute has a full programme of online and in-person exhibitions and talks, such as the The Diálogos series which holds discussions on art, culture, and the environment with artists, curators, and botany specialists.

The institute also has a focus on education, although perhaps not in the most conventional sense. In collaboration with populations from the regions of Brumadinho and Belo Horizonte, they create social projects involving experiences, discussions, and reflections. These educational efforts often explore themes related to community life and seek to bring people together through art and nature, with ever-attentive consideration to development and the formation of critical thinking abilities.
