"In a world often described as doomed and desperate, where the individual and the specific prevail over the common and the human over nature, Taylor Smith looks for lost connections. This can primarily be seen in her working method. The numerous interdisciplinary collaborations in which she has taken part attest to this, whether it’s with the scientists of the Institute of Biology of the École Normale Supérieure, the botanists of the Jardin des Plantes, the environmentalist aerial photographer J Henry Fair, or the landscaper Emeline Brossard. In her work, Smith returns to the origin of creation of an object of art to understand, unfold, and reveal it in order to undo as much as possible the imperatives of our automated, segmented, and disconnected world. She creates the paper which she incorporates into her compositions, blows glass, and shapes ceramics. She sometimes uses nature itself—light and photosensitivity—to produce printing images with a photosensitive emulsion made from flower petals. Smith’s work shows us not a solution, but a process. It reveals the mechanisms which bind us and govern our society, our system, and our ecosystem. Her creative process comes from her desire to be part of a cycle, placing the human within a natural whole, connecting it to water, air, earth, and light. After artificial hierarchies are abolished, everything is part of the same whole - different regions, different elements, the infinitely small and the infinitely large. As well as being links in a chain of collaborations and exchanges, Smith’s works are stages in themselves; ever-evolving, the cycle of elements tells us that everything is regenerating, with or without us, in spite of everything.”
